We need to make our voices heard to identify the challenges and needs of the community — so that we can work towards solutions together. The most dangerous thinking, Paterson contends, is thinking that we cannot change. Just one of the many efforts he is part of to help inspire and motivate innovative thinkers and changemakers is the new Mayor’s Innovation Challenge, which calls on citizens to identify a community problem and come up with out-of-the-box ways to solve it. The winners will receive internships at the City of Kingston and resources to pilot their ideas. Can your city do that? Dr Chris Brauer, Director of CAST, summarises the results and discusses the role of early adopters, entrepreneurship, and the overall transition of these technologies from novelty and entertainment to daily impacts on everyday lifestyles, health and wellbeing, privacy, and productivity.  DESPINA PAPADOPOULOS, Owner, Studio 5050 Design for the Real World: Design, Technology and Social Disruption In 1971 Victor Papanek wrote "design has become the most powerful tool with which man shapes his tools and environments (and, by extension, society and himself)." Forty-two years later and with increasingly complex social and environmental challenges ahead of us it is unclear how design can be for used for social disruption and change. What kind of design methodologies can we develop to build sustainable systems, understand the relationship of thinking to making, and articulate the ideas and ideologies that "underwrite" the systems we create? ANDY GOODMAN, Managing Director , Fjord Permeable Beings: Design stories that get under your skin From smart materials to embedded technologies: how everyday objects are becoming responsive and predictive, connecting us to the data sphere and reducing the distance between our skin and the surfaces of the made world. Speculating further beyond the realm of wearables and implants to the future symbiosis of the human body and the machine. Andy is a futurist. He's been a digital native since 1994, when he wrote a documentary called "Secrets of the Internet." Along with his love of digital, scientists inspire him: brilliant people who make surreal discoveries and work to transform reality. Now, as one of the early pioneers of the service design industry, Andy helps transform the world's biggest brands through innovative design.

How does a city like Kingston become a leading hub for innovation and technological development? It starts with a shift in perspective. No longer are these exciting happenings relegated to the likes of London, Silicon Valley, or New York City — with a big vision, any city can make the shift — for the good of its economy, people, and community. Don’t believe it? Just hear from Kingston Mayor Bryan Paterson on the vision that has helped shape the City of Kingston. It’s not enough for governments to invest, they also need to lead by example. In this clip, Kingston Mayor Bryan Paterson explains how, with the goal of making Kingston an innovation hub, the CIty of Kingston developed an online system that is citizen focused. True, they could have continued to use the old ways that had been in place for so long. But new technology and a user-focused mindset has created a system that is faster, easier, and more convenient for the people of Kingston — just one example of how the City of Kingston is leading by example in adopting new technologies and investing in innovative ideas. "Largely positive" social technologies can have "sinister" downsides for companies that choose not to monitor their digital footprints, says Alastair Paterson, co-founder of Digital Shadows. Subscribe to WIRED ►► http://po.st/SubscribeWired Speaking at Wired Money in Canary Wharf, Paterson points out that humans are now dumping a trillion gigabytes of data online every year. "It's now possible to have a digital footprint before you're born, before you've even taken actual footsteps," he says, highlighting the ultrasound photos that wind up on Facebook. "Suddenly we're living through a revolution. Almost every interaction we have is recorded." Companies used to "build walls" to make sure sensitive information was protected, Paterson says, but the proliferation of information now available online means that's no longer a failsafe method of protecting data. Some of the information exposed about a company -- customer data, board meeting minutes or details about mergers and acquisitions -- could be harmful, both to the company's reputation and more widely. "That's what we call a digital shadow," Paterson says. In this clip, Kingston Mayor Bryan Paterson describes how the City of Kingston is partnering with innovative businesses to achieve some fantastic goals, such as lowering costs and better serving the residents of Kingston. One such partner is the technology start up company DocuPet, which helps to reunite owners with their lost pets. In this symbiotic relationship, the City of Kingston has helped this start up pilot their technology, while also benefitting from its efficient new services. Bryan describes how new businesses and entrepreneurs can bring their expertise and value to the city, and how working with the city can be a valuable experience for them in return.
